Yankton Beer University started in the fall of 2015 as a way to connect beer geeks in the Yankton area. I knew that we had a lot of home-brewers, a handful of former commercial brewers, a couple hop farmers and other craft beer fans who hadn’t connected and met each other. YBU is less of a class and more of a monthly social over pints. There are currently 35 members of the club.
Typically a YBU meeting happens at The Copper Room above Ben’s and it’s either a loose-knit tasting wrapped around a theme (stouts, ciders, sours, etc) or it features a local brewery where we sample as many beers of theirs as we can. Some of the breweries featured in the past are Wooden Legs, Hydra and Fernson.
This Thursday, Take 16 Brewing Co. is featured (assuming the snowpocalypse is over by then) and we’ll be sampling six beers on tap. They are Luverne Lager, Country Mile Kolsch, Sundown Nut Brown Ale, Kick the Can IPA, and Kick the Bucket Imperial IPA. Luke Rensink (formerly of Heist Brewing) will tell us all about the beers, background information on Take 16 and talk about future plans. These meetings typically don’t dip too far into the process of beer making, as most attendees are pretty well versed.
YBU class is free for members and $5 to non-members when there is space available. This club has been a lot of fun and helped move the beer scene forward in Yankton. What other clubs are out there and when and where are they meeting? Let me know in the comments.
