The Wonders of Citra Hops

The beers made with a strong Citra hop presence are all the rage currently. Citra hops will commonly be found in pale ales and India pale ales. Craft beer fans in the Midwest will think Zombie Dust from 3 Floyds, pseudoSue from Toppling Goliath, Citra Ass Down by Against the Grain and now Hop Lab Blue from Bank Brewing.  Citra hops are loved for their mixture of grapefruit and tropical fruit flavors. Critics with good palates go on and on about grapefruit, melon, floral, lime, gooseberry, passion fruit, lychee, peach, apricot pineapple, mango and papaya notes. If that combination sounds good to you, these beers will worth seeking out.

Bank Brewing in Hendricks, MN recently released Hop Lab Blue. It is a single hopped India pale ale with Citra hops. I picked up a bomber bottle (25.4 oz.) at the Brookings Municipal Liquor Store for $9.99. I also had the “Blue” at the Bank taproom on draft.

Hop Lab Blue poured out gold with a generous white head into a Spiegelau IPA glass. The aroma was a mixture of grapefruit, tropical fruits, pine and maybe a small bit of dankness. The beer was clear with good carbonation. The flavor was a mixture of grapefruit and complex tropical fruits. The tropical flavors became more prominent as the beer warmed.  The malt bill is not overly sweet or heavy.

This is a good beer and I recommend it. The hop flavors and malt bill make for a tasty IPA. Find it now in bars and liquor stores in South Dakota and Minnesota.

If you haven’t tried a Citra beer yet; what are you waiting for?
