September 2010 Bits and Pieces

Fall is here!  This is my favorite time of the year.  I always enjoy the colorful leaves and football season.  Here are some brief updates on several items.

The Nebraska Brewing Company received a bronze medal for their Melange a Trois at the just finished Great American Beer Festival in Denver.  See my review on this delicious beer.

I was able to attend the release party for Black Betty, another Nebraska Brewing Company beer.  This beer received a gold medal at the recent US Open Beer Championship.  I will be reviewing this one soon.  The samples I tried were excellent!  Paul and Kim Kavulak were great hosts at the party.  I also visited with brewer Tyson Arp, social media expert Angela Arp and assistant brewer Sam Riggins.  I met several other craft beer fans including Mat Lamoureux from Lee’s Summit, MO (see image below).

I was able to visit Minneapolis last Friday (September 17) for a Twins game at Target Field.  The new ballpark is beautiful and is certainly worth a visit.  I had a Summit Extra Pale Ale at the game and a couple delicious pints of Surly Furious after the game.

A quick visit to the Four Firkins in St. Louis Park Saturday morning was a fitting end to the trip.  I got to meet Alvey – the store owner.  He was very friendly and helpful.  The store is worth a visit for all craft beer fans.  PS – the Twins lost to the Oakland A’s 3-1.

Brau Brothers Fresh Hop Ale

The Brau Brothers Brewing Company will be releasing their fresh hopped ale Hundred Yard Dash soon.  These ales are usually released in the US after the fall hop harvest.  It will be a must try beer for all hop lovers.  The fresh hops add amazing flavors and aromas to these beers.

New beer for Brookings – Big Sky Brewing Company Heavy Horse Scotch Ale is now available.  This should be a nice fall addition with 6.7% ABV and a slight chocolate note in the traditional molasses and fruity flavors of a scotch ale.
