Black Forest Cherry from the August Schell Brewing Company in New Ulm, MN should be on your beer bucket list this fall. It was recently top rated by the Heavy Table website in a fall taste off of Minnesota beers. I agree with the Heavy Table panel and urge you to find this beer soon!
Black Forest Cherry is the fourth release from the Noble Star Collection. It is a Berliner Weisse style of beer. Five thousand pounds of red tart cherries were added to the base Berliner Weisse beer to make this sour beer. The base beer was aged for nearly a year in Schell’s rare 1936 cypress wood lagering tanks.
I tasted the beer last weekend on a beautiful sunny 65º afternoon. It poured out reddish brown with a generous light tan head into a goblet. There was light cherry aroma on the nose. The taste was a delicious tart cherry. This beer was nicely carbonated and had a crisp finish.
Schell’s recommend pairing the beer with rich meats or a sweet dessert to contrast the sourness. I recommend you find this beer to enjoy this fall or for Thanksgiving. Thanks Schell’s Brewery for making this tasty beer!
