Green Flash Brewing Company from SanDiego arrived in local bars and liquor stores last week. They were listed in the top 25 of American craft breweries recently. They are especially known for their hop forward beers. I will be reviewing some of these excellent beers over the next couple weeks starting with Hop Head Red.
Hop Head Red is classified as a Red IPA by the company. This style of beer is usually an amped up amber ale with more prominent hops and more body. The hops include Columbus, Nugget and Amarillo. The malt bill is heavy on the caramel malt. Amarillo hops are again used in the dry hop.
ABV = 7.0%
IBUs = 70
Hop Head Red pours out deep amber into a pint glass with a one finger light tan head. The aroma is citrus hops with some hints of roasted malt. The flavor is balanced nicely with the hops and malt working well together. This is a good beer worth trying!
Red ales pair well with spicy foods. John Holl, author of The American Craft Beer Cookbook, paired red ales with blackened shrimp and corn chowder, duck chile rellenos and fried green tomatoes with sun dried tomato ale mustard. John’s book is great for all cooks and beer fans looking to learn about pairing food and craft beer. Hop Head Red would work well with these pairings too! Check it out & enjoy!
