What do you get when you combine excellent craft beer, friends, live entertainment, seminars and a beautiful day? The answer is the Great Nebraska Beer Fest (held Saturday August 27)! Breweries from 13 states offered over 160 different beers ranging from golden wheat beers to dark stouts and everything in between. Several home brewing clubs also brought their best beers to share. Attendees could roam the festival grounds sampling as many two ounce samples as they wanted to try for $30. The Omaha Pipes and Drums got the fest off to a rousing start.

I made a list Saturday morning before the fest and surprisingly was able to sample most of the beers on the list! My favorite beer was the Upstream Brewing Company Templeton Rye Barrel Aged Horse Feathers Rye Ale followed by the Empyrean Brewing Company 4 Roses Bourbon Barrel Black Pepper Porter. I also enjoyed a couple pints of the Nebraska Brewing Company Romancing the Cone IPA Friday night and Saturday at the adjacent brewpub.
Another good part of the fest was meeting brewers and friends. I met Jeff Drum, brewer and part owner of the Crow Peak Brewing Company, from Spearfish, South Dakota as well as Tyson Arp, Angela Arp and Sam Riggins from the Nebraska Brewing Company. Fellow beer bloggers Stephen Johnson of New Brew Thursday, Nate Bell from nebraskabeer and Chris Spradley of breweries, bars & beer food were there too.
I would like to thank the Nebraska Brewing Company and all the volunteers for a great fest! It is certainly worth a visit for all beer geeks in the upper midwest.
