Fresh hop beers are my favorite fall seasonal choice. You can keep most of the Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers so popular this time of year. Give me more hops!
New Belgium recently released Fresh Hop India Pale Ale. This beer is good and reasonably priced ($4.25 for 22 oz.). Fresh Hop pours out medium gold with a nice white head into a pint glass. There is a nice, but mild, nose of grassy/piney hops. The flavor has more hop character and includes a mix of grassy, piney and some citrus hops. The company website lists that Crystal and Sterling hops are used. The ABV is 7.0%.
Chasin’ Freshies Fresh Hop IPA is from west coast Deschutes Brewery. It is hopped with fresh Amarillo and Bravo hops. The malt bill is a mix of pilsner malt and flaked oats. It costs $7.99 for a 22 oz. bottle. It pours out gold into a pint glass with a white head. It has a light citrus aroma and a more prominent citrus and tropical fruit taste. There is also a bit of pine in the flavor. The body of this beer is not heavy (see malt bill). The ABV=7.4% and the IBUs=65 (bitterness units).
These are both good beers. I preferred the Chasin’ Freshies slightly because of the Amarillo hop flavor. Grab these now while they are fresh and enjoy the hop goodness. Enjoy the many fall beer choices while you can and drink responsibly.
