I had a great time last weekend! It’s now Monday and I’m still laughing and shaking my head at the adventure.
Last Friday night I traveled to Minneapolis with friends Craig Martin and Dave Kragness in search of Surly Darkness. It is a highly sought after Russian imperial stout offered at the Surly brewery on only one day and for a short time at certain Minnesota liquor stores in very limited quantities. We arrived around 10:30 to camp out for the night. People had been arriving on the streets near the brewery since 3:30. It seemed like a couple thousand people were camping and sharing beer. It was quite the scene with numerous fire pits, tents and even big screen televisions. Luckily the weather was mild and dry.
We spent a couple hours visiting with old and new friends before trying to get some sleep. People started to stir around 6 am when the smell of coffee drifted through the air. The line to get wristbands formed at 7. Only 1500 people would be allowed to purchase an allotment of up to six bottles of Darkness.
We hung out with a group of Sioux Falls beer geeks while waiting for our assigned time to pick up the beer.
The crowd included many characters including “horseman”.
The brewery was well organized with food wagons, music and lots of beer to enjoy! Our group picked up the Darkness at 12:30 and we headed back home to good old South Dakota. It was quite a trip and we have some good memories of the event. Thanks to Surly Brewing for a great time! Would I do it again? Hell yeah!
