Black Hills Beer Roundup
It has been several years since I have been in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. We were able to visit the Firehouse Brewing Company during that trip. Several new beer destinations are now available including the Crow Peak Brewing Company and the Independent Ale House. I wasn’t able to get down to Custer to Bitter Ester’s Brewhouse which a fairly recent addition. I found a couple beers at Smith’s Liquor Gallery that Brookings was out of too – Odell Shenanigans & Brau Rye Wyne!
The Independent Ale House is conveniently located in downtown Rapid City at 625 St. Joseph St. They offer 28 rotating taps, over a hundred different bottled beers & many wines. I was able to park right in front and enjoy several pints along with their delicious 3 Little Pigs pizza. This is a must stop while in Rapid City! The service was fast, knowledgable and friendly.
Another must visit beer destination is the Firehouse Brewing Company at 610 Main St. in Rapid City. They have been in business at the historic firehouse location since 1991. Many of their beers follow English and continental styles. Enjoy a sandwich during your visit. I ordered the Brewer’s Burger which was very good and filled me up for the evening.
The Crow Peak Brewing Company is located at 125 W. Highway 14 in Spearfish. They are the only brewery in South Dakota that packages several beers including 11th Hour IPA, Pile O’ Dirt Porter and Canyon Cream Ale. The brewery offers the regular beers plus several different rotating beers on tap. I was able to try Up in Smoked Porter, Spearbeer and 11th Hour IPA while there. The beers were good and the brewery is nice too! Be sure to notice the “growler” shaped stone work around the fireplace when you visit.
Lastly I wanted to mention that Rapid City has an active homebrew club, the Ale Riders Homebrew Club. Find them at their webpage and also on Facebook. Joining a club is a good way to meet others interested in brewing and craft beer. The club will be sponsoring the Bierbörse Homebrew Competition September 29-30 in Rapid City.
