When I was asked if I was interested in attending a beer tasting, I didn’t have to think long before replying with a resounding yes! Bob Jones, from the Brookings Liquor Store, presented me with the invite. The host was Beal Distributing from Sioux Falls. Beal is the local Budweiser distributer. The clincher is that they are carrying more craft beer in their portfolio. Brands that grabbed my interest were Goose Island, Green Flash, Lucid, Tallgrass and their newest addition Alaskan Brewing.
I traveled south with fellow Brookings beer geek and home brewer Craig Martin. We arrived at Beals Saturday and were given the red carpet treatment. We were treated to a great tasting event, good food and a tour of the facilities. We were able to meet Matt and Ed Beal from the distributer family. They were gracious and knowledgable about their products. Highlights included three rare sour beers from Goose Island (Halia, Lolita & Gillian), Goose Island (GI) Bourbon County Stout Barleywine and GI Class of ’88 Belgian Strong Pale Ale. This lineup would have been enough, but lots more good stuff was available.
Alaskan Brewing Company is a new addition to the area. We tried their excellent flagship offerings including the amber, pale ale, Belgian white and Kölsch.
Other highlights included Green Flash, Lucid and Tallgrass. The West Coast IPA from Green Flash, Dyno from Lucid and Buffalo Sweat from Tallgrass were great!
We were able to meet Karl Steege, our local representative, from Beal’s. I am looking forward to working with Karl to bring lots more good craft beer to Brookings!
